Writing Resumes: Putting your Best Foot Forward

Course Description:

This program is designed to increase the resume writing skills of someone who is looking for an interview, whether it is because he or she is unemployed or just wants to change jobs. Career objectives should be considered before the resume writing process begins so that the job search can be focused and the resume direct.

A resume is an organized, written presentation of a person's accomplishments and job-relevant information. It is an overview that does not tell everything about a person, but it is one of the most important pieces of the job search process.

Resumes are only skimmed initially for about twenty-five to thirty-five seconds by human resource recruiters. This program will help participants get the most out of that brief time so that the recruiter takes a second look at the resume and will want to set up an interview. Time will be given to find a job to post for and also to tailor the participant's resume for that job posting. (Participants are asked to bring an electronic version of their personal resumes in .doc format to class and need a basic working knowledge of Microsoft Word.)

Key objectives:

  • Understand the purpose of a resume
  • Identify the two formats of a resume
  • Construct a career objective
  • Edit and revise their personal resumes
  • Learn how to use a job search website
